The Summer months often bring us outdoors, enjoying company, vacations and away from our normal schedule.  That often means time by the pool, a day at the beach, park or out in nature.  That can also mean lots of unhealthy food choices that contain way too much sugar and fried foods that leave us feeling anything but healthy.

There are several foods that I love to include that boost Summer fun, keep you feeling good and play a positive part in maintaining a healthy weight and positive well-being.

1– A flavorful, mood-boosting substitute for meat is the Portobello mushroom. Your taste buds will love it and your waistline will thank you. Researchers at the University of Buffalo’s Department of Nutrition Science have found Portobello mushrooms effective at stabilizing blood sugar and minimizing insulin spikes, staving off cravings and keeping those unwanted pounds away.

What to pair it with

Mixed greens drizzled with a garlic, lemon and olive oil dressing.

2– Lighten up your summer fare by enjoying some wild caught salmon. A good source of protein and one of the best sources of Omega-3s, salmon promotes heart health and even helps protect against depression.  It’s good for the body and the brain.

What to pair it with

Grilled asparagus and squeeze of fresh lemon.

3– Add a taste of summer flavor by whipping up a fast and mouth-watering tomato and avocado salad. Research conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health reveals that Lycopene in the tomato can lower stroke risk by up to 55 percent.  The Alpha-Lipoic Acid in the tomato is known to stabilize blood sugar and promote a healthy mood.

Avocados are a good source of healthy Monounsaturated Fat, which helps the brain function properly to promote that good mood.

What to pair them with

Add in basil and onions and drizzle with homemade lemon and olive oil dressing.

4—Toss up a berry bowl, make a smoothie or just eating them on their own, each time you enjoy these summer sweet berries, you’re moving toward better health. Blueberries are a great source of Resveratrol plus it’s a low-glycemic food, meaning that they don’t result in drastic insulin spikes brought about by other sweet treats.

Sweeten up your bowl with strawberries as they contain gut-health-promoting fiber. Strawberries are also source of iron, which can help fend off anemia-related fatigue and weight gain. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are all packed with antioxidants that promote healthy cell function and have been shown to significantly lower depression.

Pair these berries together to make a simple berry salad.

5—Iced Green Tea is a refreshing Summer drink. Green tea is rich in antioxidants, a good mood booster that also revs up your metabolism.  A winning combination in weight loss and well-being.

What to pair it with

A frosty glass filled with ice and a mint sprig or two.
